Japanese: カワガラス(河烏) - カワガラス（英語表記）dipper

A general term for birds of the passerine order Cinclidae family, or one of those species. Birds of this family are 15 to 20 cm long, have short necks and tails, and are stocky-built, but have long and strong legs. Their plumage is dark brown or dark brown and white, with both sexes being the same color. They live alone in mountain streams in pairs, and are the only passerine bird that has adapted to diving underwater to get food. There is one species each in Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. The dipper Cinclus pallasi (illustration) is about 20 cm long, dark brown all over its body, and got its name from the fact that it lives in streams.

スズメ目カワガラス科Cinclidaeの鳥の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この科の鳥は全長15～20cm，くびと尾が短く，ずんぐりした体つきをしているが，脚は長くて強い。羽色は濃褐色か，濃褐色と白色で，雌雄同色である。山地の谷川に単独かつがいですみ，スズメ目の中では水中に潜って食物をとることに適応した唯一の鳥である。ヨーロッパ，アジア，北アメリカ，南アメリカにそれぞれ1種ずつが分布する。　カワガラスCinclus pallasi（イラスト）は全長約20cm，全身が濃褐色をしていて，谷川にすんでいるところからその名がついた。
