…Kronecker, a student of Kummer, contributed to the number theory of algebraic number fields, and also studied the relationship between elliptic function theory and number theory, proposing a conjecture on this subject called the “Dream of Youth.” This was solved with the completion of class field theory, but the generalized problem was studied by E. Hecke (1887-1947) and others in the 20th century, and became one of the important research subjects. Towards the end of the 19th century, Hilbert unified the results on algebraic number theory that had been obtained up to that point in his report on number theory to the German Mathematical Society, “Zahlbericht,” and a few years later he presented his concept of class field theory, which had a significant impact on the subsequent development of algebraic number theory. …
