A nomadic people living in the southern part of Namibia, in southwestern Africa. Like the San, they speak a language belonging to the Khoi-San language family, characterized by the frequent use of tongue clicks. The San and the Khoi-Koin are remarkably similar in three areas: physical characteristics, language, and culture. The San and the Khoi-Koin are usually distinguished by the fact that the former depend on gathering and hunting, while the latter depend on livestock farming. The San, who were once widespread in eastern, central, and southern Africa, retreated to southern Africa by around the 15th century under the pressure of the Bantu people who had been moving south. It is believed that some of the San assimilated with the Bantu people and adopted a social organization along with cattle herding, becoming the Khoi-Koin.
