New World monkey

A general term for animals belonging to the superfamily Capuchin, order Primates, suborder Anthropoidea, class Mammalia. The name comes from the fact that their distribution has been limited to Central and South America throughout modern and geological times. Monkeys belonging to this superfamily Ceboidea are also called Platyrhimi because they generally have widely spaced nostrils. Modern-day monkeys are divided into two families: the Callithricidae marmosets and the Cebidae capuchin. However, the Callimiconidae family is sometimes created by separating the Callimiconidae from the former family.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱霊長目真猿亜目オマキザル上科に属する動物の総称。現代および地質時代を通じて、分布が中央・南アメリカに限られることがその名の由来である。この上科Ceboideaに属するサルは、一般に鼻孔の間隔が広いので広鼻猿類Platyrhimiともいう。現生のものは、マーモセット科Callithricidaeおよびオマキザル科Cebidaeに二分される。ただし、前者のなかからゲルディモンキーを独立させて、ゲルディ科Callimiconidaeを設ける場合もある。
