Year of death: October 10, 1911 (Meiji 44)
Year of birth: 7/9/1870 (8/5/1870)
A watercolor painter of the Meiji period. Born in Tokyo. In 1891, he entered Nakamaru Seijuro's private art school, and in 1892, he was taught by Harada Naojiro. During this time, he became friends with Miyake Katsumi and became familiar with watercolor painting from an early age. In 1894, he decided to specialize in watercolor painting, and in 1896, he went to Australia, and in 1900, he traveled around Europe and the United States, where he invented his own unique "point painting" painting technique. In 1901, he published "Watercolor Guidebook," and thereafter, together with Miyake and others, he created an unprecedented watercolor painting boom. In 1902, he participated in the formation of the Taiheiyo Painting Association. In 1903, he founded the watercolor painting research group Shuncho-kai, launched the magazine Mizue, and worked hard to popularize watercolor painting. His works exhibited at the Bunten exhibition include "At the Foot of Mt. Hotaka" (owned by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo).
