A canal in Belgium. It connects the ports of Liège and Antwerp, and is 129.6 km long. It was named after King Albert I. Before World War II, Liège and its surrounding area was Belgium's largest industrial (coal and steel) region on the Meuse River, but since the Meuse River passes through Liège and enters Dutch territory, construction began in 1930 as a canal that passes through Belgian territory to directly connect this region with the port of Antwerp, and it was opened in 1939. The elevation difference between Liège and Antwerp is about 56 meters, and it has six locks, allowing 2,000-ton ships to navigate the canal in one to two days.
