Sigmund Reichsfreiherr von Herberstein
1486‐1566
Austrian diplomat. He visited Moscow twice, in 1517 and 1526, as an envoy for Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Archduke Ferdinand. He was unable to achieve his goal of mediating peace between Poland and Russia due to his war with Turkey, but the book he wrote during this visit, Rerum moscoviticarum commentarii (1549), was the first guide to Russia by a European, and contains a description of Russia's geography, economic situation, customs, religion, and history from ancient times, making it a valuable historical source.
