A bourgeois liberal and nationalist movement that arose among the Tatar bourgeoisie in the Russian Empire in the 1880s and spread throughout Central Asia from the 1890s onwards. It is also called the Jadid movement. It started as a "New Method" (Usul-i Jadid in Arabic) education movement that advocated reform of traditional Islamic education. After the Russian Revolution of 1905, it moved away from culturalism in Central Asia and took on the color of a liberal political movement that advocated reform for the bourgeois development of the Islamic world, and was particularly influenced by the Young Turks revolution of 1908.
