A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family that grows in low, marshy areas (illustration). The stems rise from long, horizontally creeping underground stems, are 30-50 cm tall, soft, and have whorls of four leaves at each node, but occasionally three. The leaves are broad linear with almost no petioles, 3-7 cm long, 2-5 mm wide, soft, and hairless. Flowers bloom in dense, cylindrical spikes at the ends of the stems from August to October, blooming in succession from bottom to top. The calyx has five lobes and is softly hairy along with the bracts. The corolla is reddish purple and has four lobes, and the four stamens are long and protrude outside the flower, with reddish purple hairs on the filaments. 低湿地に生えるシソ科の多年草(イラスト)。茎は長く横にはう地下茎から立ち上がって,高さ30~50cm,やわらかく,節から4枚ずつ葉を輪生するが,まれに3枚のこともある。葉は広線形でほとんど葉柄がなく,長さ3~7cm,幅2~5mm,やわらかくて毛がない。花は8~10月ころ茎の先端に円柱状の花穂を作って密につき,下から上の方に向かって順に咲いていく。萼は5裂し,苞とともに軟毛がある。花冠は紅紫色で4裂し,4本のおしべは長く花外につき出て,その花糸の部分に紅紫色の毛がある。
