A general term for insects belonging to the Nymphalidae family, Lepidoptera, subfamily Acraeinae, or one of these. Small to medium-sized butterflies with long, slender wings and a long, slender body. They span 3 to 8 cm. They are most prevalent in the African continent, with about 200 species known, including those in Madagascar. There are also many species in South America. Only a few species are found in the Indo-Australian region. Many species secrete a yellow, foul-smelling substance from their thorax, which helps them avoid attack by predators, and many butterflies mimic other members of this subfamily.
