A famous Chinese prostitute. Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, she became a prostitute at the age of 15. Soon after, she was noticed by Hong Jun, who was 50 years old at the time, and the following year she became his concubine. Hong Jun was the top passer of the imperial examination in the 7th year of the Tongzhi era (1868). That same year, Hong Jun was appointed plenipotentiary to Russia, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands, so she went to Europe with him, staying mainly in Berlin for four years. After returning to China, she opened brothels in Shanghai and Tianjin when Hong Jun died shortly thereafter, and made a great name for herself. In 1900 (the 26th year of the Guangxu era), during the Boxer Rebellion, she fled to Beijing, and because she could speak German, she gained the favor of the German commander of the Eight-Power Alliance, Waldersee, and prevented friction between the Allied forces and the citizens of Beijing, thereby gaining their popularity.

中国の名妓。江蘇省蘇州に生まれ，15歳で妓女となる。まもなく50歳の洪鈞に見初められ，翌年その側室となる。洪鈞は同治7年(1868)の科挙首席合格者(状元)であった。この年，洪鈞はロシア，ドイツ，オーストリア，オランダの四国全権公使に任じられたので，ともにヨーロッパに行き，おもにベルリンで4年間滞在。帰国後，まもなく洪鈞が死ぬと上海，天津で妓楼を開き，大いに名をあげた。1900年(光緒26)，義和団事件の際北京に避難し，ドイツ語を話せることから8ヵ国連合司令官のドイツ人ワルデルゼーにとり入り，連合軍と北京市民の摩擦を防いだことによって人望を得た。
