Mitsune Oshikouchi - The Three of Oshikouchi

Japanese:
Mitsune Oshikouchi - The Three of Oshikouchi

A poet of the early Heian period. Compiler of the Kokin Wakashu. One of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. He served as a local official, such as Kai Gon no Shosakan in 894 (Kanpei 6), Tanba Gon no Daisakan in 907 (Engi 7), and Izumi Gon no Jo. He left behind a poem in "Suzakuin Ominae Shiawase" in 898 (Shotai 1), but it was the Kokinshu that made him famous. He collected 60 poems, second only to Ki no Tsurayuki. In 907, during Emperor Uda's visit to Oigawa, he was the only one to present two poems for each of eight of the nine themes. His career after "Kokinshu" was spectacular, and he appeared in such events as "Teijiin no Utaawase" (Poetry Contest at the Teishi-in Temple) in 913, and he was also well-known as a poet of folding screen poems, and was praised on a par with Tsurayuki. His fame as a composer of poems about famous places suggests that he excelled in improvisational poetry. He excelled in poems about the four seasons, was witty, and was characterized by his ability to grasp events subjectively and express them in simple words.
