Oshima, Tokyo, is a town that occupies the entirety of Oshima Island in the Izu Islands. During the Edo period, it was under the direct control of the shogunate and was governed by the Nirayama magistrate, but in 1878 it came under the jurisdiction of Tokyo Prefecture. The main settlement is Motomachi on the west coast. The town produces a lot of camellia oil, made from camellia seeds, and also raises dairy cows to produce butter. Flower and vegetable cultivation is also popular. It has a warm climate and beautiful scenery, including Mt. Mihara, and is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The women's clothing and hairstyle, known as "anko," are distinctive. The town has been hit by disasters frequently caused by eruptions of the active volcano Mt.
