Mino School - Mino

A school of haiku poetry founded by the Shomon haiku poet Shiko, also known as the Shishimon. Shiko was a disciple of Basho in his later years and based in his hometown of Mino. He expanded the influence of his school over a wide area, from the Mitsukoshi (Echizen, Ecchu, Echigo) region in the north to Kyushu in the south, and together with the Ise school of Otsuyu, he dominated the local haiku world. After Shiko's death, his tradition was passed down to Rogenbo Rikō and Gochikubo Kinsa, and then in 1780 (An'ei 9), it split into the Saiwa and Isai schools, but both schools count Basho as the first and Shiko as the second, and after merging in 1958 (Showa 33), they have continued to this day. The Mino school's haiku style was an even more vulgar version of the "light" style of Basho's later years, and also contained a light morality, which made it very popular with the general public, but in later years, together with Otsuyoshi's Bakurin style (Ise school), it came to be denigrated as the followers of the Shiko school and the country Basho school.

俳諧(はいかい)流派。蕉門(しょうもん)俳人支考(しこう)が開いた俳諧の一派で、獅子(しし)門ともいう。芭蕉(ばしょう)晩年の門人であった支考は、郷里美濃を本拠とし、北は三越（越前(えちぜん)・越中(えっちゅう)・越後(えちご)）地方から南は九州方面まで、広範囲にわたって自派の勢力を拡張し、乙由(おつゆう)の伊勢(いせ)派とともに地方俳壇を支配した。支考没後も、その道統は、廬元坊里紅(ろげんぼうりこう)、五竹坊琴左(ごちくぼうきんさ)に受け継がれ、その後1780年（安永9）に再和(さいわ)派、以哉(いさい)派の両派に分裂したが、両派とも芭蕉を1世、支考を2世と数えて、1958年（昭和33）の合流を経て、今日まで続いている。美濃派の俳風は、芭蕉晩年の「軽み」の風をさらに平俗にしたもので、軽い教訓性をも含んでいて、一般民衆に大いに迎えられるところであったが、後年、乙由の麦林(ばくりん)風（伊勢派）とあわせて支麦の徒、田舎(いなか)蕉門などとそしられるようにもなった。
