A village in Shimoina County, southern Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,641 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Koshibu River, a tributary of the Tenryu River, between the Akaishi Mountains and the Ina Mountains, the village borders Shizuoka Prefecture to the east. The town is divided into the Kashio district to the north and the Okawahara district to the south by Ochiai, where the Koshibu River, crossed by National Route 152, and its tributary, the Kashio River, join. Almost the entire area is covered by forests and fields, and the lumber industry is thriving. Agriculture is centered on rice and sericulture, with livestock farming and vegetable cultivation also carried out. Heavy damage from torrential rains in June 1961 and the construction of a dam for the Koshibu River Comprehensive Development in 1964 led to a large-scale relocation of villagers, causing a rapid population decline.
