…Although he was not satisfied with their academic education, he met Van Gogh there. In the mid-1880s, he met Aristide Bruant (1851-1925), a chanson singer and owner of the cabaret Mirliton, and began to frequent the nightlife of Montmartre. From this time on, his style shifted from the impressionist style to his original line drawing style. The subjects of his works were the cabarets, cafes, and brothels that were opening one after another at the time, such as the Moulin Rouge, and the entertainers and prostitutes who lived there. …
