A semi-public steel trust established in 1934. Initially it was the government-run Yawata Steel Works, and the privately-owned Kamaishi Mines, Mitsubishi Steel, Wanishi Steel, Fuji Steel, and Kyushu Steel, with Toyo Steel joining later, before acquiring Osaka Steel in 1936. At the time of its establishment it monopolized 97% of the nation's pig iron production, but as the major open hearth companies did not participate it only accounted for 51% of steel ingots and 43% of steel products. However, during the wartime system it played an important role as the core of Japan's steel industry in supplying military supplies. In 1950, under the Act to Eliminate Excessive Concentration of Economic Power, it was split up into the Yawata Steel Works, Fuji Steel, and others. →Nippon Steel Corporation → Related topics Steel industry|Hirohata Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
