Nanakai [village] - Nanakai
A village in Nishiibaraki County, central Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 2,621 (1995). Located in the mountains in the southern part of the Yamizo Mountains, the Shioko River and Fujii River, tributaries of the Naka River, flow eastward, and cultivated land and settlements have developed in the river basins. Most of the village area is covered by forests. The village produces timber and shiitake mushrooms, and there is also a tea factory. Since the 1960s, the population has been moving out. Tin ore was discovered during the Tensho era (1573-92), and the Mito Domain's tin magistrate was stationed there during the Edo period, but it declined around the Kyoho era (1716-36). Takatori Mine, which had been mining tungsten since the Meiji era, closed in 1963.

茨城県中部,西茨城郡の村。人口2621(1995)。八溝山地南部の山間に位置し,那珂川支流の塩子川,藤井川が東流,流域に耕地,集落が発達する。村域の大部分を山林が占める。木材やシイタケを産し,製茶工場もある。1960年代以降,人口流出が続いている。天正年間(1573‐92)スズ鉱が発見され,江戸時代は水戸藩の錫奉行がおかれたりしたが,享保(1716‐36)ころ衰退した。明治以来タングステンを採掘していた高取鉱山も1963年に閉山となった。
