A city in central-eastern Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city center is at the mouth of the Yamato River where it flows into the Osaka Plain. It has prospered since ancient times as a key transportation hub connecting Osaka and Yamato, and as the terminus of Yamato River shipping. In addition to the traditional dyeing and bleaching industries, the city is home to bearings and other machine parts, chemical and pulp industries, and a cottage industry for button manufacturing. Grape cultivation and wine brewing are also thriving in the foothills. It is close to Osaka City and is undergoing residential development. There are ancient tombs, as well as the remains of Kawachi Kokubunji Temple and Kokubun Nunnery Temple. It is served by the Kansai Main Line, the Kintetsu Osaka Line, and the Nishi-Meihan Expressway.
