Gigi - Gigi

Japanese:
Gigi - Gigi

A freshwater fish belonging to the order Siluriformes and family Gigliidae of the class Osteichthyes. Also known as Hagegigi. Also called Gigi, Gyu-gyu, Gyu-gyu, Gigita, etc., including the closely related Gibachi and Nekogigi. It is found in Honshu and Shikoku west of the Fuji River in Shizuoka Prefecture and the Yura River in Kyoto Prefecture, but a different species, Nekogigi, is found in the rivers around Ise Bay. It hides under large stones in the middle reaches of rivers and lakes, and is active at night, feeding on large benthic animals, shrimp, and small fish. It is also active during the day when the water is murky. It spawns under stones or between stone walls from May to August.

In addition to this species, the other two species that live in Japan are the Gibachi and Nekogigi. This species has the deepest notch in the center of its tail fin, while the Gibachi has the shallowest. All three species rub the spines on their pectoral fins against the bones at their base, making a unique squeaking sound. The distribution ranges of these three species do not overlap at all in Japan.
