Tin(II) oxide and tin(IV) oxide are well known. [Tin(II) oxide] Chemical formula: SnO. A black or gray powder obtained by heating tin(II) oxalate (SnC 2 O 4 ) in a stream of carbon dioxide or by boiling an alkaline solution of tin(II) chloride (SnCl 2 ) to obtain tin(II) hydroxide (Sn(OH) 2 ) at 100°C, taking care not to allow it to come into contact with oxygen. Specific gravity: 6.44. When heated in hydrogen, it becomes metallic tin, and when heated in air, it becomes tin(IV) oxide. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
