The Legend of Atreus

In Greek mythology, the Atreus family was a powerful family whose ancestor was Tantalus and whose power was based in Mycenae, but they were destined to repeatedly commit horrible crimes, such as murder among family members and adultery. The events that befell this family were covered by many writers in ancient times, and as a result, there are many different versions of the details of the legend. The following is an overview. Tantalus, the ancestor of the Atreus family, was the king of Asia Minor and the son of Zeus. He was on such good terms with the gods that he would invite them to banquets, but to test the gods' omniscience, he killed his son Pelops and served him at the table.
