This is the world's largest brown algae of the Laminaria family, growing up to 50-60m in length. It is also known as giant kelp. The body has a clear distinction between roots, stems, and leaves, and relatively thin, cylindrical, elastic stems extend from a clump-like attachment point formed by the entanglement of branched, thread-like roots. The stems branch out two or more times near the base, and numerous naginata-shaped leaves grow unevenly. The leaves contain gas-containing pneumatizes in the petioles, so the body extends toward the seawater surface, with the upper parts floating on the water's surface, forming what is known as a forest canopy.
