Ooiryo

One of the ritsuryo government offices, it was a vassal of the Ministry of the Imperial Household. According to the Yoro Personnel Order, it was responsible for collecting shomai (rice milled and polished) and miscellaneous grains from each province, and distributing them to each office either as is or cooked. The office consisted of one head, one assistant, one jo, one o-sakan and one sakan, and 60 o-inbe. It first appeared as an office in 671 (the 10th year of Emperor Tenchi's reign), and in 720 (the 4th year of Yoro), four shisho were assigned to it. The position of head was equivalent to a junior fifth rank, and from the end of the Heian period onwards, the position was hereditary among the Nakahara clan.

令制(りょうせい)官司の一つで宮内(くない)省の被官。養老(ようろう)職員令によると、諸国の舂米(しょうまい)（舂(つ)いて精白した米）や雑穀を収納し、現物のまま、あるいは炊飯して諸司に分給することを掌(つかさど)った。職員は、頭(かみ)1人、助(すけ)1人、允(じょう)1人、大・少属(さかん)各1人、大炊部(べ)60人など。官司としての初見は671年（天智天皇10）で、720年（養老4）に史生(ししょう)4人が配属された。頭は従(じゅ)五位下相当官で、平安時代末以降は中原氏が世襲することとなった。
