The name of the head of the Sumita school of Kabuki musicians. There have been four generations to date, each of whom has played the flute, but the third is particularly famous. The first (1814-61) was Kintaro, a disciple of Taga, the daughter of the second Sumita Matashichi, who took the name Matabei in 1833 (Tenpo 4). The second (1839-1903) was adopted by Yoshinosuke, a disciple of the first, and took the name in 1864 (Genji 1). The third (1859-1921) was Matashiro, a disciple of the second, who took the name in 1910. He was a skilled flute player and a member of the Nagauta Kenseikai, where he gained popularity for his sensual tones. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
