Founded in 1958, it is Japan's first overseas resource development company, based on oil rights acquired from Saudi Arabia (1957) and Kuwait (1958). The governments of both countries each invested 10%. In 1960, the company succeeded in drilling the first well in the Khafji oil field offshore of the neutral zone of both countries, and continued to develop the field, reaching an annual production of 17 million kl in 1966. In 1968, it also succeeded in exploratory drilling in the Khut oil field to the north of the same area. In 1966, it built an oil refinery in Khafji, producing naphtha, diesel oil, heavy oil, etc. Negotiations between the Japanese and Saudi Arabian governments continued as the mining rights for the Khafji oil field were to expire in February 2000, but no agreement was reached and the rights expired. A new contract was signed for the mining rights acquired from the Kuwaiti government, which expire in January 2003. In January 2003, AOC Holdings, a holding company, was established through a business integration with Fuji Oil.

サウジアラビア（1957年），クウェート（1958年）両国から得た石油利権に基づき，1958年設立された日本最初の海外資源開発会社。両国政府も各10％を出資。1960年両国中立地帯沖合のカフジ油田１号井に成功，引き続き開発を進め1966年年産1700万klに達した。1968年同地北方のフート油田でも試掘に成功。1966年カフジに製油所を建設し，ナフサ，ディーゼル油，重油などを生産。2000年２月にカフジ油田の採掘権が期限切れとなるため日本・サウジアラビア両政府での交渉が続けられたが，合意に達せず失効した。クウェート政府から得ている2003年１月期限の採掘権は新契約を締結。2003年１月富士石油との経営統合により持ち株会社AOCホールディングスを設立。
