Originally, it was a general term for crustaceans belonging to the genus Cyclops , family Cyclopidae, subclass Copepoda, most commonly found in freshwater and brackish water. It is about 0.5 to 1.5 mm long and almost colorless and transparent. It is found as plankton in lakes and marshes, as well as in marshes and groundwater. The body is divided into an almost oval prosoma and a long and slender posterior body, which are movably articulated at the boundary between them. The prosoma consists of a semicircular head and segmented thoracic segments 3 to 5. The head has a pair of long first antennae and a short second antennae in front of it, followed by a mandible, two pairs of maxillae, maxillae, and first swimming leg on the ventral surface.

本来は，淡水および汽水にもっともふつうに見られる橈脚（じようきやく）亜綱キクロプス科キクロプス属Cyclopsに属する甲殻類の総称。体長0.5～1.5mmくらい。ほとんど無色透明である。湖沼のプランクトンとして，また，湿原や地下水などにも見られる。体はほぼ卵形をした前体部と，細長い後体部とに分かれ，それらの境目で互いに可動に関節している。前体部は半円状の頭部と分節している第3～5胸節からなる。頭部には前方に1対の長い第1触角，短い第2触角，これらに続いて腹面に大顎（だいがく），2対の小顎，顎脚（がつきやく），第1遊泳脚がある。
