A shallow area of about 300m deep near the northern end of the shallow area that runs from Oki Island to the northeast in the central part of the Sea of Japan. The shallowest point is 286m. Separated from the intermediate area of more than 2000m deep is the Kitayamato Bank, which is 397m deep at its shallowest point. In 1926, the survey ship Yamato surveyed it and named it Yamato Bank. It is a huge shallow area with a short diameter of 20km and a long diameter of 130km. The top of the bank is flat, and in the southern part, granite and gneiss are exposed. Gravel, sand, and foraminifera fossils have been found on the bank, and the rock types of the gravel include granite, andesite, rhyolite, and sandstone, and most of these gravel are rounded. There is an upwelling current near the bank, which makes it a good fishing ground for mackerel, hairtail, and other fish.
