… In addition to the Chinese folk music that was introduced to Japan and was passed down as Ming music, Qing music, or Ming-Qing music, some of it became popular in Japan, especially as songs for “Chinese dances” with lyrics changed to corrupted Japanese or Japanese-phrases. Famous examples include “Kan Fran” from the Genroku period (1688-1704) and “Kan Kan No” from the end of the Edo period. From these, “Hokkai-bushi” and “Sanosa-bushi” were born. …
