…Early medieval cupboards were made of thick wood with iron bands, but after the adoption of frame construction around the 15th century, cupboards became larger and were decorated with elaborate carved ornaments such as linenfolds and tracery. In 16th-century Italy, low cupboards called credenzas became popular and were placed in the large halls of nobles' mansions to store and display expensive tableware. These were originally sacristans used in medieval churches to store sacred vessels, and were then modified into secular cupboards, and can be seen as the origin of the modern sideboard. …
