French restoration architect, architectural historian, and architectural theorist. Born in Paris. He avoided the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) and studied architecture on his own. He was recognized by P. Mérimée, the Director of Cultural Heritage Protection, and was tasked with repairing the Church of La Madeleine in Vézelay. He then worked with veteran architect Jean-Baptiste Lassus to restore Notre-Dame de Paris from 1845, solidifying his position. He later served as a member of the Commission for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and as the Director of Architecture for the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and was responsible for the restoration of cathedrals such as Chartres, Reims, and Amiens, the walls of Carcassonne, and the Château de Pierrefonds (ordered by Napoleon III).

フランスの修復建築家，建築史家，建築理論家。パリ生れ。エコール･デ･ボザール(国立美術学校)を忌避して独学で建築を学び，文化財保護技監であったP.メリメに認められてベズレーのラ･マドレーヌ教会の修理に当たった。ついで老練の建築家ラッシュスJean‐Baptiste Lassusとともに，1845年よりパリのノートル･ダム大聖堂の修復工事を担当してその地位を固めた。その後，文化財保護委員会委員，宗務省の建築技監として活躍し，シャルトル，ランス，アミアンなどの大聖堂やカルカソンヌ市の城壁，ピエールフォン城(ナポレオン3世の命による)などの修復に当たった。
