A town in Naka district facing Sagami Bay in central Kanagawa prefecture. The city centre was a post town on the Tokaido road in early modern times, and since Matsumoto Ryojun opened Japan's first swimming beach in 1885, it has developed as a resort and villa area in the Shonan area. The Tokaido main line runs through the town. Vegetable cultivation, dairy farming, and mandarin orange cultivation are thriving, and there is also coastal fishing. The Kokufu district in the west was the former location of the Sagami provincial capital. It is home to Shigitatsusawa, known for a song by Saigyo Hoshi. 17.18 km2 . Population 33,032 (2010).
