Oizumi [village] - Oizumi

Japanese:
Oizumi [village] - Oizumi
A village in Kitakoma County in northwest Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 3,910 (1995). The village occupies a plateau on the southern foot of Akadake, the main peak of the Yatsugatake mountain range. The village's name comes from a large spring within the village. The center of the village is a valley, and after World War II, about 150 farming families settled in Idehara and began to develop the area. Most of the village area is covered by forest, but rice has been cultivated using the rivers and numerous springs originating from the Yatsugatake Mountains. Taking advantage of the high altitude, the village also cultivates lettuce, tomatoes, and other vegetables, and in recent years, orchid cultivation has become popular.
