There are four research vessels at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States: (1) A 98-foot schooner built in 1928 by G. Iselin, who later became the institute's director. He used this vessel to observe the North Atlantic. (2) A 142-foot, 460-ton, two-masted steel sailing ship (with engine) built by the institute in 1931. This ship conducted oceanographic observations covering 500,000 nautical miles over a period of 35 years. (3) The II was built in 1961 and is a 210-foot, 2,300-ton steel vessel with two, twin-shaft 1,100-horsepower diesel engines. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
