[Retinitis pigmentosa]
A hereditary disease characterized by subjective symptoms of night blindness and progressive narrowing of the visual field, and typical fundus findings of pigmentation, vascular narrowing, and optic nerve atrophy. Most cases are autosomal recessive, and are characterized by early onset, relatively rapid progression, a high incidence of cataracts, and macular atrophy. In cases with autosomal dominant inheritance, the age of onset is late, and visual function is fairly well preserved. …
