[ I ] Also known as denitrification. This refers to the biological reaction process that reduces nitrate and nitrite ions to molecular nitrogen. It is usually carried out under anaerobic conditions by soil microorganisms. While aerobic organisms use oxygen as the final electron acceptor in respiration, denitrifying organisms use nitrate or nitrite and reduce them to molecular nitrogen. The mechanism has not been fully elucidated, but the outline is as shown in the diagram below. Denitrification is part of nitrate respiration. This process, which occurs in soil, is a major loss in terms of securing nitrogen sources for plants. [ II ] The removal of nitrogen from petroleum fractions in petroleum refining. It occurs at the same time as desulfurization in hydrorefining. Source: Morikita Publishing "Chemical Dictionary (2nd Edition)" Information about the Chemical Dictionary 2nd Edition |
