Denitrification - Datsuchitsu

[ I ] Also known as denitrification. This refers to the biological reaction process that reduces nitrate and nitrite ions to molecular nitrogen. It is usually carried out under anaerobic conditions by soil microorganisms. While aerobic organisms use oxygen as the final electron acceptor in respiration, denitrifying organisms use nitrate or nitrite and reduce them to molecular nitrogen. The mechanism has not been fully elucidated, but the outline is as shown in the diagram below.

Denitrification is part of nitrate respiration. This process, which occurs in soil, is a major loss in terms of securing nitrogen sources for plants. [ II ] The removal of nitrogen from petroleum fractions in petroleum refining. It occurs at the same time as desulfurization in hydrorefining.

【Ⅰ】脱窒素作用ともいう．硝酸イオンや亜硝酸イオンを分子状窒素にまで還元する生物反応の過程をいう．通常，土壌微生物の作用で嫌気的条件下で行われる．好気的生物が呼吸の最終電子受容体として酸素を利用するのに対し，脱窒を行う生物は硝酸あるいは亜硝酸を利用し，窒素分子にまで還元する．その機構は十分解明されていないが，その大略は図のとおりである．

脱窒は硝酸呼吸の一部である．土壌中で起こるこの過程は，植物の窒素源の確保にとって大きな損失である．【Ⅱ】石油精製において，石油留分から窒素分を除去すること．水素化精製で脱硫と同時に起こる．
