1492‐1549 A French female writer. She was the sister of King Francis I, Duchess of Navarre, and grandmother of Henry IV. One of the leading intellectuals of her time, she protected humanists and evangelicals from the oppression of the Catholic Church, and was revered as the "French Minerva." Her faith, which was an internal mysticism fused with Platonism, was incompatible with both the uniform and conservative Catholicism and the dogmatic Calvinism, and she was criticized by both. Adding to her family misfortunes, she spent her later years alone. In her spare time from her busy official duties, she wrote lyric poems full of religious ideas, as well as religious and secular plays, all of which dealt with themes such as the search for true love, the longing for love, or satire of formalized faith.
