Marguerite de Navarre

A French female writer. She was the sister of King Francis I, Duchess of Navarre, and grandmother of Henry IV. One of the leading intellectuals of her time, she protected humanists and evangelicals from the oppression of the Catholic Church, and was revered as the "French Minerva." Her faith, which was an internal mysticism fused with Platonism, was incompatible with both the uniform and conservative Catholicism and the dogmatic Calvinism, and she was criticized by both. Adding to her family misfortunes, she spent her later years alone. In her spare time from her busy official duties, she wrote lyric poems full of religious ideas, as well as religious and secular plays, all of which dealt with themes such as the search for true love, the longing for love, or satire of formalized faith.

フランスの女流作家。国王フランソア1世の姉，ナバール公妃，アンリ4世の祖母。当時有数の知識人であり，カトリック教会権力の圧迫から人文主義者や福音主義者を庇護し，〈フランスのミネルウァ〉として敬愛された。プラトン主義と融合した内面的神秘主義的なその信仰は，画一的･保守的なカトリックとも，教条主義的なカルバン派とも相入れず，双方の批判を浴び，家庭的な不幸も加わり孤独の晩年を送った。多忙な公務の余暇に宗教的想念に満ちた抒情詩や宗教劇･俗劇を残したが，いずれも真の愛の探究や愛の渇望，あるいは形式化した信仰の風刺をテーマとする。
