Prefectural flower and tree - Kenkakenboku

Japanese:
Prefectural flower and tree - Kenkakenboku
A flower or tree selected to represent a prefecture. Prefectural flowers are also called "prefectural flowers," and in prefectures they are called "tobana," "dobana," or "fubana." Prefectural trees are also called "prefectural trees."
[Prefectural Flower]
The selection of a prefectural flower began with a campaign to select a "local flower" that took place in 1953. In February of that year, NHK, the All Japan Tourism Federation, Japan Travel Bureau, and the Plant Friendship Association jointly planned the selection of a "local flower." This was called for with the aim of "promoting the spirit of botanical appreciation and plant conservation, while also promoting local culture and love for one's hometown," and was supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (now the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries), and the Ministry of Transport, as well as related local organizations.
