Also called a cylinder seal, this cylindrical seal was first used by the ancient Sumerians and was then widely used in Mesopotamia, Iran, Syria, Anatolia, Egypt, and other places. Made of shells or stone, it was engraved with geometrical figures, animal figures, and pictures of mythical heroes fighting wild beasts, and sometimes even names. Its use is unclear, but it is believed that it was used as a talisman with magical meaning, or that it was rolled and imprinted on wet clay tablets for administrative or commercial purposes.
