Kamon

The character 窠 originally meant an animal's hole, but by extension, a circular area is likened to a hole with a Chinese flower inside, and the word 窠mon refers to this pattern. It is also sometimes called mokomon (Japanese quince pattern) because its shape resembles the cross section of a melon when sliced. It was originally one of the patterns used on court wear during the Tang dynasty in China, but was brought to Japan during the Nara period and later became a yusoku pattern for the nobles (kuge). This pattern is sometimes used alone, and sometimes combined with a ground pattern of hail, forming the 窠 and 霰 pattern. The latter has been used frequently on outer hakama and mo from the Middle Ages onwards.

窠は、元来動物の穴巣を意味しているが、転じて円形の区画を穴巣に見立てて、そのなかに唐花(からはな)が入っている文様を窠文という。またその形が瓜(うり)を輪切りにしたときの断面に似ているので、木瓜文(もこうもん)とよぶ場合もある。元来中国の唐代、朝服に用いられた文様の一つであったが、奈良時代に日本に伝わり、のちに公家(くげ)の有職(ゆうそく)文様となる。この文様は、単独に使用される場合と、霰(あられ)の地文と結び付いて、窠に霰文様となる場合がある。後者は中世以後の表袴(うえのはかま)や裳(も)に多く使用される。
