A general term for compounds produced by the condensation of carboxylic acids and their derivatives with amines. The general formula is _RCONH2 . The hydrogen of ammonia is replaced with an acyl group. It can also include those produced from inorganic acids. Production methods include condensation of carboxylic acid derivatives with amines, hydrolysis of nitriles, heating of ammonium salts of carboxylic acids, and rearrangement of ketoximes. Acid amides tend to be colorless crystals and generally have high melting points. They are neutral. They are relatively insoluble in water. They produce carboxylic acids by hydrolysis. They produce amines by reduction. Silk and nylon are polymeric compounds of the acid amide type. Formic acid amide and formamide are liquids and are used as organic solvents.
