Baryshnikov, Mikhail

Japanese: バリシニコフ(英語表記)Baryshnikov, Mikhail
Baryshnikov, Mikhail
Born January 28, 1948 in the Soviet Union, Baryshnikov is an American dancer. His full name is Mikhail Nikolayevich Baryshnikov. After attending the Riga Opera and Ballet School, he entered the Vaganova Ballet School in Leningrad, where he studied under Alexander Pushkin, who had trained such top stars as Rudolf H. Nureyev and Natalia R. Makarova. While still a student, he won first place at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1966 and joined the Leningrad Ballet (→Mariinsky Theatre Ballet). Although he was not blessed with height, he gained popularity as a dancer with orthodox Russian ballet technique. In 1974, he defected to Canada while the ballet company was performing in Canada, and danced with the American Ballet Theatre and other companies, earning the nickname "Misha." He expanded his repertoire to include contemporary works, and created such a boom that Misha goods were sold. He also worked as a choreographer, and in 1980 became the artistic director of American Ballet Theatre. He also appeared in musicals and films such as Days of Love (1977), White Nights (1985), and Dancer (1987), which were well received. In 1990, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the company's founding, he left the company and founded the White Oak Dance Project. He then became a freelancer, and in 2005, he founded the Barishnikov Arts Center.
