Born in Tenbun 19. A native of Tanba. Studied under Manase Dosan. Initially served Toyotomi Hidetsugu, rose to the rank of Hoin and was given the title of Shojōin. Later became Tokugawa Ieyasu's personal physician. He is also said to be the author of the kana zoshi "Inumakura." Died on December 14, 1609. Age 58. His pen name was Tokuiwa.
