A type of bedding. It has a collar and sleeves, and is similar in shape to a kimono, but is large, with wide sleeves that are open at the cuffs and are filled with cotton. It is smaller than a similarly shaped blanket called yogi, but larger than a dotera. It is used as bedding in the summer or under a blanket when it is cold, with the hands passing through the sleeves. The origin of the word is unclear, but according to the Morisada Manko, it comes from the Shasekishu, which states, "I put my wet kosode on the futon and was getting impatient, so I thought it was a shame and turned it over and brought it with me." According to the same book, in Edo, people did not use futons and only used bedding, and the hem and sleeves were cut longer on the inside than on the outside and folded up on the outside.
