1899‐1971 Indonesian politician. Born to an aristocratic family in West Java. While studying law at Leiden University, he served as chairman of the nationalist Indonesian Association, a student organization. After graduating in 1925, he stayed in Moscow for nearly two years and published The Indonesian Peasant Movement through the International Peasant Union. After returning to Indonesia, he opened a law practice and was exiled by the Dutch government to Bandaneira Island and then to Makassar for about 12 years for his involvement in the independence movement as a member of the Indonesian National Party. During the Japanese military administration, he had contact with the naval attaché office in Jakarta and was appointed as a member of the Independence Preparation Committee.
