… Norman E. Borlaug (1914- ), one of the promoters of the Green Revolution, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in developing high-yielding Mexican short-culm wheat. This Mexican short-culm wheat, famous for being one of the parents of Japanese wheat, Norin 10, was developed at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maiz Y Trigo) which was established in Mexico in 1963 with the support of the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, and quickly spread to Mexico, India, Pakistan, and other countries. Also with the support of the two foundations, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) was established in 1962 on government-provided land in Los Baños, near Manila, Philippines.
