Terakoya (temple school) - Terakoya

Japanese: 寺子屋(寺小屋) - てらこや

An institution for the education of the general public for minors in the early modern period. The education given there was aimed at discriminating between samurai and the other classes of farmers, artisans, and merchants. The content of education consisted of learning reading, writing, and abacus, which are necessary for daily life, as well as practical knowledge and talent. (Reading, writing, and abacus, hand-learning) All of these aimed to impart necessary knowledge, skills, and morals by memorizing letters, in order to live daily and social lives. In terms of the content of the education, it was clearly subordinated to real life, and by being immersed in this, education for the development of human beings in a horizontal relationship was not being carried out.

近世における未成年者に対する民衆教育の機関。そこで行われた教育は，武士とそれを除く農，工，商とを身分的に差別するためのものであった。教育の内容は日常生活に必要な読み，書き，実用的な知識と才能とを必要とするそろばんなどを学ばせた(読み書き算盤，手習い)。いずれも日常生活や社会生活を営むために，手近な必要知識や技能と道徳に関する内容を文字を覚えることで授けようとした。学習する内容からいえば，明らかに現実の生活に従属しており，これに埋没することによって，横の関係における人間形成の教育は行われていなかった。
