Lake Manasa (English spelling)

Japanese: マーナサ[湖]（英語表記）Mānasa

A sacred lake in Indian mythology, it is located at the southern foot of Mount Kailasa, the sacred land of the god Shiva at the northernmost tip of the Himalayas. It is an important setting for the Urvasi story, which has been passed down since the Rig-Veda, the oldest Indian text, as a love story between the heavenly maiden Urvasi and the human king Pururavas, and has also been featured in literary works such as Kalidasa's Vikrama Urvasiya. When King Pururavas broke his promise to Urvasi at their wedding and showed her his naked body, she became angry and disappeared, taking the form of a swan and staying in Lake Manasa.

インド神話上の神聖な湖で，ヒマラヤ山脈の最北端にあるシバ神の聖地カイラーサ山の南麓に位置する。インド最古の文献《リグ･ベーダ》以来，天女ウルバシーと人間の王プルーラバスとの恋愛物語として語り伝えられ，カーリダーサの《ビクラマ･ウルバシーヤ》など文芸作品にも取り上げられている《ウルバシー物語》の重要な舞台となった。プルーラバス王が結婚の際の約束をたがえて，ウルバシーに裸身を見せたため，彼女は怒って姿を消し，白鳥の姿となってマーナサ湖にいた。
