Born: January 18, 1937 in Akita, Akita [Died] March 25, 2009. Tokyo, Chiyoda Gymnastics athlete. Graduated from Tokyo University of Education. Competed in three consecutive Olympic Games (1960 Rome, 1964 Tokyo, and 1968 Mexico). Contributed to three consecutive victories in the men's gymnastics team all-around, and was the first Japanese to win the individual all-around at the Tokyo Olympics. Won a gold medal in the parallel bars and a silver medal in the floor exercise. Won a silver medal in the vault at the Mexico Olympics, and won five gold medals and two silver medals in three Olympic Games. Professor at Nihon University from 1980 to 2007. After becoming a director of the Japan Gymnastics Association in 1981, he held important positions such as executive director and vice president. In 1989, he became a director of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC). Received the Helms Award in 1964, the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1996, and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2008.
