Born: January 18, 1937 in Akita, Akita
[Died] March 25, 2009. Tokyo, Chiyoda Gymnastics athlete. Graduated from Tokyo University of Education. Competed in three consecutive Olympic Games (1960 Rome, 1964 Tokyo, and 1968 Mexico). Contributed to three consecutive victories in the men's gymnastics team all-around, and was the first Japanese to win the individual all-around at the Tokyo Olympics. Won a gold medal in the parallel bars and a silver medal in the floor exercise. Won a silver medal in the vault at the Mexico Olympics, and won five gold medals and two silver medals in three Olympic Games. Professor at Nihon University from 1980 to 2007. After becoming a director of the Japan Gymnastics Association in 1981, he held important positions such as executive director and vice president. In 1989, he became a director of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC). Received the Helms Award in 1964, the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1996, and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2008. In 1999, he was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

体操競技選手。東京教育大学卒業。オリンピック競技大会（五輪）で，1960年ローマ，1964年東京，1968年メキシコと 3大会連続出場を果たした。五輪の男子体操競技団体総合 3連覇に貢献し，東京五輪で日本人初の個人総合優勝に輝き，種目別の平行棒で金，床運動で銀メダルを獲得した。メキシコ五輪では跳馬で銀メダルを獲得し，3度の五輪で金メダル 5個，銀メダル 2個を獲得した。1980～2007年日本大学教授。1981年日本体操協会理事に就任後，専務理事，副会長など要職を歴任した。1989年日本オリンピック委員会 JOC理事。1964年ヘルムズ賞，1996年紫綬褒章，2008年旭日中綬章を受けた。1999年国際体操殿堂入りを果たした。
