Japanese: 摩多羅神 - またらじん

[1] A Buddhist term. The guardian deity of the Jyogyo-Zammaido Hall, worshipped in the Tendai sect. Also, the deity worshipped as the principal image of the Genji -Kimeido altar. One theory is that he wears a Tang-style headgear, Japanese-style hunting clothes, and plays a drum. It is said that he appeared on a boat when Saicho entered China and when Ennin returned to Japan. (Keiran Shiyoshu (1318)) [2] In particular, he is the main deity of the Ushi- matsuri (Chinese cowl festival) held in Uzumasa, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is said that Genshin enshrined him at Koryuji Temple. It also refers to the person who dresses up as this deity at the festival, wearing a headgear, hunting clothes, and a large paper mask, and the mask that he wears. [一] 仏語。天台宗であがめる、常行三昧堂の守護神。また、玄旨帰命壇の本尊としてまつられた神。一説に、頭部に唐制の幞頭(ぼくとう)をつけ和様の狩衣を着、鼓を打つ姿をとるとする。最澄入唐の際および円仁帰朝の際に、その船中に化現したと伝えられる。〔渓嵐拾葉集（1318）〕[二] 特に、京都市右京区太秦(うずまさ)の牛祭の主祭神。源信が広隆寺に勧請したものと伝える。また、その祭で、幞頭、狩衣の姿に紙製の大きな面をつけて、この神に扮(ふん)した人やその面をいう。《季・秋》〔日次紀事（1685）〕
